Speaking at the PMI-LA South Bay Evening Meeting April 16, 2013

I am honored to be speaking again at the PMI-LA South Bay Evening Meeting and the topic will be based on my post about the PM in perpetual career transition.  A timely topic given all the transitions I’m seeing including myself just recently.  Here are the details:

2013 April 16 South Bay Meeting

Don_Kim_LinkedInSpeaker – Don Kim, PMP, CSM
Topic – The PM In Perpetual Career Transition

The “new normal” of today’s workplace that project managers find themselves in, are that they are in a constant state of career transition.  Whether we are in or out of work, there seems to be a constant and perpetual worry that we will be out of work and/or feel very stuck in the position we are in and want to transition out of it.  This is due to many factors, but the most prevalent are pay that is not keeping up with the rising cost of living expenses, being stuck in a rut with our current job title or area of expertise, working with demoralized and unmotivated teams due to the constant layoffs, reorganizations and rampant career dissatisfaction, etc.

Come to this meeting to learn about career models both within and outside the traditional full time employee, strategies to “sell” and “brand” your unique selling position, and become, in the infamous words of the comedian Steve Martin, “so good they can’t ignore you!”

About the Speaker:

Don Kim knows a thing or two about career transitions: A one-time aspiring, but disillusioned PhD student in philosophy (who ironically now teaches project management and business analysis at three universities) became an owner of several franchise businesses (which included an Arco AM/PM gas station, mail and shipping center, retail consulting, etc.) who taught himself to program software and even sold it on the side, finding a way to leverage these skills to transition back into the workforce initially as a software developer.  This included a short stint in a start-up cutting code for an artificial intelligence call center system, to working for a consulting company developing web applications for Fortune 500 companies.

The next big transition occurred when he discovered the field of project management that seemed to integrate and reconcile technical knowledge and abilities with business management into a perfect marriage.  He has never looked back and has been working officially as a project manager for the past 6 years in the healthcare industry.

He worked for St. Jude Medical, a major medical device manufacturer and is currently transitioning to a new position and field.  He is a certified PMP, ScrumMaster as well as educator, trainer, writer, speaker and consultant in the PM industry.  He is currently serving as the 2013 VP of Marketing for PMI-LA.  He also runs a highly visited and popular PM website at www.projectation.com
